Check Yahoo's Ymail Mail in Gmail by enabling POP3 for Free

In a previous post I talked about how to access Microsofts Hotmail in Gmail. Today I would like to show you how to check your Yahoo Ymail email using Gmail. Notice how I said "ymail" and not "yahoo.com" email addresses, this is because  this tip works for Yahoo's Ymail email accounts but not with their "yahoo.com"(or Yahoo's Rocketmail email service) email accounts.

When I tried it with a new "yahoo.com"  and a new "rocketmail.com" address I could not get it to work. Even if I tried the "channge Yahoo's regional settings for free POP3 access" trick, it still would not work. Yahoo would not give me the necessary POP3 access unless I signed up for their premium mail service and paid the $20 annual fee.

The good news is that Yahoo seems to have enabled pop3 access by default for Ymail.com email addresses. So here is how to access your Yahoo Ymail.com email for free in Gmail.

1.) Log into your Gmail account

2.) Click on "Settings" located in the top right hand corner of your Gmail page.

3.) Click on "Accounts and Import" and then click on the "Add POP3 email" button located in the "Check mail using POP3 section.

4.) A new window will pop up, enter your Yahoo Ymail address and click "Next Step".

5.) In this window enter the following settings, replacing "yourusername" with your full Ymail email address and "youruserpassword" with your password:

     Username: yourusername@ymail.com
     Password: youruserpassword
     Pop Server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
     Port: 995

Check the box next to "Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail. All the other options are optional. After entering the above settings click the "Add Account" button.

6.) You will next be greeted by a screen asking you if you want to "send mail as" your new  "ymail.com" email address. If you click "No" then you are all done and you can now retrieve your Yahoo Ymail email using Gmail. If you click yes, then scroll down to step 7.

7.) Enter any name you wish in the name field, and click "Next Step"

8.) You will now come up to a screen giving you two options. Choose the first option "send through Gmail (easier to set up) and click "Next Step"

9.) Finally you will see a verification screen asking you to verify that you own the Yahoo Ymail address. Click on the "Send Verification button, and Google will send a verification email to your Yahoo Ymail email address.

10.) Log in to your Yahoo Ymail email address and look for the verification email that Google just sent. Open it and click the link in the email or copy the number listed in the body of the email, and paste this number into the verification box in Gmail and click the "Verify" button.

That's it, you can now check your Yahoo Ymail email in Gmail for free.

  2. Thank you for the heads up...not a big deal as it is a public email address...but I like to keep spam down to a minimum so thanks for pointing it out...

Did you double check to make sure you have the correct server address and port?

  3. Hi Michael,
    thanks, it works.
Anonymous.. at first it happened to me to ...on step 5, you should put your complete ymail address, not only your user name.. give it a try..

  4. Thanks Abu....I will edit step 5 to make more clear that you should add your full Ymail email address as your username....

  9. Does not work for us either and is SUPER FRUSTRATING. Error still says "Server denied POP3 access for the given username and password." Any other work-arounds? This has taken way too long.

    Thanks!

  10. Perhaps I got lucky then and was able to access this when it was available and now they have shut it down...but as of today I was able to recieve mail sent to ymail in my gmail account...but a few of have said it does not work....fortunately for me I do not use ymail very often....but for others we can only hope that the ymail service offers better POP3 or IMAP options in the future....

  16. Solution! Change your settings to Yahoo Asia, which allows POP forwarding for free. Info here

  18. Until step five, everything is fine but.
Unfortunately the following error message appears "The server does not allow the access in POP3 for connection code and access code. Server Error "[AUTH] Error logging in. Please visit http://mail.yahoo.com""

    Any idea?

  21. Since the ONLY thing I use Yahoo for any longer is to access their groups - who cares. Yahoo has gotten to be the pits and many users refuse to even use their services. For the biggest name on the Internet a few years ago, they are sadly slipping into dumb-dumb land. And like I said, "Who cares!".

  22. worked for mee.......

  23. It didn't work for me at first, but then I found a setting under:

Options (on the right hand side) -> More Options -> POP & Forwarding

I ticked the 'Allow your Yahoo! Mail to be POPed' option and it now works :)

    Hope this helps,

  24. Clive: Do you have the paid version of Yahoo by any chance?
    ReplyDelete
  25. Just the free version.

Just to add: My previous comment fixed an authorization error. I've forgotten the exact error, but something like 'AUTH ERROR ...'

  26. I have the same problem with Anonymous.....

It seems ymail is not compatible with gmail importing mail

    HELP please =)

  27. My apologies I am anonymous #2 and I am trying to import yahoo OLD mail into my new gmail account.

    Problem:
    My yahoo email is YMAIL

I have followed the steps and have been unsuccessful

  28. Sadly, i just tried the "allow yahoo to be pop'd" option and it isn't there - directs you to upgrade....

  29. For those who can't get it working, Clive's suggestion at 12:48pm works:

    "In Ymail:

Options (on the right hand side) -> More Options -> POP & Forwarding

I ticked the 'Allow your Yahoo! Mail to be POPed' option and it now works"

Do it! Just got it working!
    ReplyDelete
  30. Same as Clive and Kate!.

    In ymail I clicked:

Options (top right corner) -> More Options -> Pop & Forwarding (in the left collum) and then ticked Allow your Yahoo! Mail to be POPed and went back to gmail and followed Michael's steps and it worked perfectly.

I don't pay for my ymail account (or any other)!

  32. It had the Pop & Forwarding taking me to the page to pay for it... So i had to use

    http://popfwd.mail.yahoo.com/pf/PopFwd?.done=http://in.f951.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Options&rand=1255761663

then i switched it back to yahoo classic mail and i could enable pop.

  33. This anonymous person is right. It works if you allow Yahoo's pop & forwarding through that link

    http://popfwd.mail.yahoo.com/pf/PopFwd?.done=http://in.f951.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Options&rand=1255761663

  34. That link worked for rocketmail for me too. :-)

  35. I went to >Options>Advanced Options, which is VERY handy to know. But...
They are asking me to upgrade. I think they are 'poaching' the urban areas.

(Unfortunately, everyone who had assets in the urban areas has liquidated them long ago. We are in a 'depression' according to the definition that the difference between a recession and a depression is that wages as well as prices are pressured and decline.)

BUT TO THE POINT... HOW do I change to ASIA, UK, etc.? from the same Options>Advanced Options? I'll be looking for that and report back... (This is a GREAT BLOG! Thanks everyone!)

  36. Thank you so much.

What worked for me was a combination of going here:

    http://popfwd.mail.yahoo.com/pf/PopFwd?.done=http://in.f951.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Options&rand=1255761663

Then I followed the instructions on here. I really appreciate that you took the time to post pictures.

  37. I HAVE 2 EMAILS: YAHOO.COM AND YMAIL.COM
How can I forward one email account to the second email account?
I don't want to keep signing in all the time.

I have been trying the above mentioned instructions but they did not work for me. Ex: Options > POP & Forwarding, Allow Yahoo mail to be POPed,
    or the link used above.
Is there a solution? Does the $20 upgrade method work?
    ReplyDelete
  38. For forwarding did you try the same method...Options > POP & Forwarding > and then select the forwarding option to forward one account to the other?
    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks for the useful screen shots.

  40. Big thanks, the Gmail trick sorted my Ymail pop3 problem exactly as described.

  41. It worked, August 2011. Sign in to ymail. Open another window and go to http://popfwd.mail.yahoo.com/pf/PopFwd?.done=http://in.f951.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Options&rand=1255761663 and finally click enable pop. Enjoy!
